The purpose of God

God has a purpose for those who follow him.

Sometimes as Christians we lose focus on what our purpose is. We get caught up in the activities that we do. Some would say that God’s purpose is to be a good mother or a father. Some would say God’s purpose is for them to be a teacher. Some would say that God’s purpose is to be healed.

These are all aspects of God’s purpose. However, God’s purpose is not what we do. God’s purpose is what we become through the process of life. “”A student is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master. It is enough for the student to be like his teacher, and the servant like his master. If the head of the house has been called Beelzebub, how much more the members of his household! ” (Matthew 10:24–25, NIV84)

God’s purpose is that we become disciples of His son. God’s purpose is that as we follow Jesus, we become like Jesus. God’s purpose is that as we study about Jesus, our lives are transformed into the image of Jesus. God’s purpose is that as we serve Jesus and serve one another, we become servants who look like Jesus.

What did Jesus Teach? Jesus taught that our lives are to be focused on seeking the Kingdom of God and loving God and one another. He taught about character and about the heart. “”Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God. Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. ” (Matthew 5:3–10, NIV84) Jesus taught that the greatest love was to lay down your life for another.

What did Jesus do? Jesus healed the sick. He cleansed the leper. He cast our demons. He raised the dead. He proclaimed freedom for the captive. He brought hope to the broken hearted. He taught about the love and mercy of God. Jesus took the role of a servant and washed His disciples feet. Jesus laid down His life that others may live.

Our purpose and our calling is to become more and more like Jesus. My character must conform to what Jesus taught. My actions should be what Jesus did.

We become what we look at. If I gaze at Jesus, I will become more and more like Jesus.
