The seed of a prophetic word

When God speaks to your heart, it is always a prophetic word. It is a word that carries life and power. It is a word that will shape your destiny and develop your character. It is word that will not only propel you into new levels of intimacy and authority with God, but it is a word that when fulfilled will become a blessing to others so that they too may know the goodness of God.

Prophetic words are like seeds that God plants into the soil of our hearts. There is a parable that Jesus told about the words of the Kingdom of God and prophetic words are Kingdom words. ” “A farmer went out to sow his seed. As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root. Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants. Still other seed fell on good soil, where it produced a crop—a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown. He who has ears, let him hear.” ” (Matthew 13:3–9, NIV84)

The first thing to do with a prophetic word is to test the word against the Word of God and the character of God. If it is a true word, we must make room for the word in our hearts. We must embrace the word. Our prayers about the word seek to make the word a part of our lives. Our prayers seek to reject unbelief and to belief that all things are possible and that this is God’s will. Our prayers seek to uproot those things in our lives that are contrary to the word of God and the prophetic word. In this way, our hearts become fertile soil ready to produce a crop.

After the seed is planted in fertile soil, the seed needs to be watered and nurtured. This is a season of preparation. As we pray, the steps we need to take to prepare become apparent. Perhaps Bible school or a Bible study is needed. Perhaps taking a class or going to a conference will be needed. Perhaps the Lord will direct you to books you should read or people to talk to. Different people will help that seed to grow during this time. “What, after all, is Apollos? And what is Paul? Only servants, through whom you came to believe—as the Lord has assigned to each his task. I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God made it grow. ” (1 Corinthians 3:5–6, NIV84) During the season of preparation, you can pray and seek the character to walk in the word. You can pray and develop the skills to practice the word. All these activities nurture the seed.

Then comes the season of waiting. This is the season of death and transformation. The seed of the word must die. ” I tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds. ” (John 12:23–24, NIV84) There comes a time when a seed that is planted dies and ceases to become a seed – it becomes transformed into the fullness of what was planted. This season of waiting is a lonely time. It is a time of wondering and questions. This is the time where we must stay firm and follow Jesus. “Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves me. “Now my heart is troubled, and what shall I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour’? No, it was for this very reason I came to this hour. Father, glorify your name!” ” (John 12:26–28, NIV84) This is a time to serve and wait. Our prayers seek to embrace the process. Our prayers seek the Glory of God and will of the Father. We stay focused on God and we worship.

The next season is the fulfillment of the promise of the seed. “He also said, “This is what the kingdom of God is like. A man scatters seed on the ground. Night and day, whether he sleeps or gets up, the seed sprouts and grows, though he does not know how. All by itself the soil produces grain—first the stalk, then the head, then the full kernel in the head. As soon as the grain is ripe, he puts the sickle to it, because the harvest has come.” ” (Mark 4:26–29, NIV84) Slowly promise transformed by death and waiting sticks up out for the ground and sees its first light. We pray for patience at this time because although the sun is shining on the promise, it is not harvest time. This is a season again of growth and nurture. Our prayers have great expectation and hope. The promise is beginning to look like what God said it would.

Finally the season of the harvest comes. For those who were faithful in the prior seasons, the expectation of a hundred fold harvest stands ready. This is the season of the prophetic word becoming a blessing to others. This is the season where God’s hand and faithfulness shine forth. This is a season of thankfulness and a season of labor. We pray for endurance, faithfulness and we maintain an attitude of gratitude.

Whatever season you are in with the prophetic promises of God, stay the course and you will see its fulfillment.
