Prospering While in Captivity

If we are honest with ourselves, most of the time when we find ourselves in captivity, all we focus on is on getting free. We ask God to change our circumstances. We tell God we do not belong in this place. We tell God we don’t deserve this. The Lord already knows all that. The Lord already has your freedom planned out. He is a God who says, “I make known the end from the beginning, from ancient times, what is still to come. I say: My purpose will stand, and I will do all that I please. From the east I summon a bird of prey; from a far-off land, a man to fulfill my purpose. What I have said, that will I bring about; what I have planned, that will I do. ” (Isaiah 46:10–11, NIV)

What the Lord asks you to do while in the place you are at is to prosper. To prosper means to succeed, to advance, to call this a good place, to become mighty in this place. Let’s take a look at the example of Joseph. “The Lord was with Joseph and he prospered, and he lived in the house of his Egyptian master. When his master saw that the Lord was with him and that the Lord gave him success in everything he did, Joseph found favor in his eyes and became his attendant. Potiphar put him in charge of his household, and he entrusted to his care everything he owned. From the time he put him in charge of his household and of all that he owned, the Lord blessed the household of the Egyptian because of Joseph. The blessing of the Lord was on everything Potiphar had, both in the house and in the field. ” (Genesis 39:2–5, NIV)

Prospering is a choice. Favor with those around us is the outcome of our prosperity. Blessings follow favor. The key to prospering is to know that God is with you. Yes, you may be in a situation that you might not like, but God is with you. When God is with you, you can prosper and transform the environment around you and you will find favor.

Potiphar was blessed because Joseph chose to prosper. There are people around you who need to see you prosper. You are in the place you are because of the plans and purposes of God. Choose today to prosper and to change the atmosphere around you.

How do you prosper? Begin by thanking God. A grateful heart will praise and worship in every circumstance. Peter praised God and his chains fell off. After you praise and worship, then serve the people around you. As you serve, you will find favor in this place. As you find favor, the blessings of God will overtake you.

Yes – you may find that God will orchestrate circumstances to promote you that you will not understand. Worship anyway. Josephs favor landed him in prison, but that was only God’s setup for promotion. Never stop prospering!
