Do Christians belong in politics? It is a question before me as my GREAT and BELOVED state of Wisconsin had made it to the national news. What is my role as a believer in the chaos, tumult, and anger that I see around me.
The Bible says we are to honor and submit to our leaders. “Remind the people to be subject to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready to do whatever is good, ” (Titus 3:1, NIV) We are to pray for those in leadership. “I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone— for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Savior, ” (1 Timothy 2:1–3, NIV) We are to submit to the government of the world that we find ourselves in. “Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every authority instituted among men: whether to the king, as the supreme authority, or to governors, who are sent by him to punish those who do wrong and to commend those who do right. For it is God’s will that by doing good you should silence the ignorant talk of foolish men. ” (1 Peter 2:13–15, NIV)
I do not agree with the morals and the values of our current President. I do however honor him and pray for him. I may not have voted for him, but now I do give him honor and respect.
I hear many people cursing our current Governor and I am distraught because we are never to curse our leaders. When we curse, we bring God’s judgment upon ourselves. “Do not revile the king even in your thoughts, or curse the rich in your bedroom” (Ecclesiastes 10:20, NIV) David who was to become the next political leader, never cursed Saul who persecuted him. David understood that our words have the power of life and death and that we live by them.
Yes, Christians must take a Godly stand in politics. We must stand with honor and with truth. We must stand in love and proclaim that there is a better way than the anger and hate that I see coming.
There are Christian principles that this world must learn if we are to prosper. Government must learn principles of servanthood, stewardship, commitment, loyalty, faithfulness and responsibility. We must take care of the poor and the widow and the sick. We must respect all people and live with dignity.
Is there dignity in chanting and comparing our current leader to a tyrant? No.
Is there good stewardship in living beyond your means? No.
Is there responsibility in running away from conflict? No.
My politics is formed by my faith. My desire is to be a light shining in the darkness. Are there any other lights out there?
