Choose Blessing

We receive from the past generations. We cannot help it. Our very essence is the reflection of those who walked before. I carry my parent’s DNA and also my grandparents. I am taught in the culture of my family. My values are formed by the people around me.

It is true that there are generational curses passed down in families. One example is alcoholism. Alcoholism runs in families, and children of alcoholics are four times more likely than other children to become alcoholics. Then there are the behaviors that along with it such as guilt, anxiety, anger, and depression. Another example is divorce where children in those families have struggles unknown in intact marriages.

There are also generational blessings. Learning to walk in the paths of God is a generational blessing. Passing on mantles of training and authority like Elijah did with Elisha and Paul with Timothy.

The good news is that the blessing is far stronger than the curse . The generational curse lasts 4 generations but the blessing and love of God goes for thousands of generations. “You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments. ” (Deuteronomy 5:9–10, NIV84)

It is not right to believe that if you grew up in a poor family environment that you must walk out the same poor choices. Everyone gets to choose. The power of the blessing of God is far stronger than the power of the curse of Satan. However, we must fight to walk in our freedom to be children of blessing and children of promise.

That fight begins with acknowledging that the path we are on is not pleasing to God. Then we must believe that God wants to bless us. When we find the place of believe, we must commit ourselves to God, trusting that he will empower us to walk in the blessing. It is up to us to receive the blessing of God and renounce the curse.

“Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law, having become a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree”— ” (Galatians 3:13, NASB95) Our faith in Jesus had the power to break every curse in our lives.

Fighting for the blessing means never quitting until you receive. “Blessed is a man who perseveres under trial; for once he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him. ” (James 1:12, NASB95)

Fighting for the blessing means keeping our eyes on God, His Word and His promises. “But one who looks intently at the perfect law, the law of liberty, and abides by it, not having become a forgetful hearer but an effectual doer, this man will be blessed in what he does. ” (James 1:25, NASB95)

Will you live under the blessing? Or will live under the curse? It is your choice. “”If anyone is willing to do His (God’s) will, he will know of the teaching, whether it is of God or whether I speak from Myself. ” (John 7:17, NASB95)
